From the basics to emerging diagnostic technologies: What is on the horizon for tilapia disease diagnostics?

Tilapia is an affordable protein source farmed in over 140 countries with the majority of production low- and middle-income countries. Intensification tilapia farming has exacerbated losses caused by emerging re-emerging infectious diseases. Disease diagnostics play a crucial role biosecurity health management to mitigate disease loss improve animal welfare aquaculture. Three continuous levels (I, II III) for aquatic species have been proposed Food Agriculture Organization United Nations (FAO) Network Aquaculture Centers Asia Pacific (NACA) promote integration basic advanced methods achieve accurate meaningful interpretation diagnostic results. However, recent proliferation cutting-edge molecular applied diagnosis diseases aquacultured animals shifted focus researchers users away from approaches toward diagnostics, despite fact that many can be rapidly diagnosed using inexpensive, simple microscopic examination most aquaculture were discovered histopathology. This review, therefore, revisits highlights importance three tilapia, particularly frequently overlooked procedures (e.g., case history records, gross pathology, presumptive histopathology). The review also covers current technologies pathogens including polymerase chain reaction (conventional, quantitative, digital), isothermal amplification Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP), recombinase (RPA), clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-based detection, lateral flow immunoassays, as well discussing what on horizon (next generation sequencing, artificial intelligence, environmental Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) Ribonucleic (RNA) point-of-care testing) providing future vision transferring these farmers stakeholders sustainable food system transformation.
